WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE?

  • Jesus curses an unproductive fig tree
  • He cleans up the Temple – again
  • Religious leaders are looking for a way to kill Jesus but can’t formulate a plan
  • Jesus reminds his followers that he will have to die
  • Jehovah God verifies Jesus’ ministry
  • The disciples are stunned by a dead fig tree
  • Jesus tells them to believe and pray in their belief
  • Jesus is challenged to prove his authority for his ministry
  • Jesus tells the parable of the disobedient sons
  • Jesus tells a parable of the vineyard keeper and his murderous farmhands
  • Jesus tells a parable of a wedding banquet no one wants to attend
  • Jesus is challenged about paying taxes

SCRIPTURES USED IN THIS PODCAST

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR NEXT?

Jesus Stories is close to the end of the telling of the life of Jesus. What would you like to hear after we finish this story? I have three suggestions to throw out.

  • The first option is to continue Jesus Stories by talking about the Jesus Stories which are created in the lives of the Apostles as the church is established and spread throughout the Roman Empire. This narrative will come from the book of Acts and other sources as appropriate. We’ll use this time to talk about some of Paul’s letters which were written in the same time period as the book of Acts.
  • The second option is to jump back to the beginning of the scriptures and talk about the book of Genesis – the most foundational book in all of the Bible. Not only will we tell those stories, but we will look at how these stories point forward to Jesus and what they teach us today.
  • Our final option is to back to the gospels and tell Jesus Stories from the individual gospels. In other words, we start with Matthew and tell of Jesus life and teachings from Matthew’s narrative. Then we follow up with Mark, Luke, and finally John. (This is my preference!)

What Happens in This Episode?

In this Jesus Stories episode, as Jesus approaches Jerusalem he tells a parable of a rich nobleman. He visits the home of Simon the leper, whom he had healed. Simon hosts a party in his honor. Among the attendees are Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Mary anoints Jesus with oil – much to the dismay of some. Jesus finally rides into Jerusalem and is honored as the King he is. While the crowd shouts approval, the Pharisees plot to kill both Jesus and Lazarus. Jesus laments Jerusalem’s future fate when he enters the city, takes a look at the Temple and then leaves.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE?

  • Jesus teaches on prayer. Keep praying. Don’t give up.
  • The prayers of a Pharisee and a tax collector.
  • “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
  • Parable of the landowner who hires help for his vineyard. He pays everyone the same, regardless of how long they worked.
  • “So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”
  • Jesus goes to his friend Lazarus to “wake him up.” He raises him from death to live again.
  • The Sanhedrin plots a way to kill Jesus.

In this episode of Jesus Stories, Jesus’ teachings become more pointed – more direct. Through parables, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and their attitudes about money and teaching on honesty and faithfulness. He uses a parable to point to their attitude toward the poor. And he will discuss the nature of the coming Kingdom of God and the need to be watchful and ready for its arrival.

  • He heals a man on the Sabbath asking, “Which of you doesn’t work on the Sabbath?”

  • We hear a parable of a great banquet which no one will attend – except those who are living on the street
  • Jesus cautions his followers to count the cost for following him

  • A teacher of the law asks a question, in order to justify himself.
  • Jesus uses this opportunity to tell a parable – a famous one!!!
